OUR HISTORY

American Legion Post 439 | Saginaw, Michigan

Proudly Serving Veterans and Our Community Since 1947

American Legion Post 439 has a proud history of service, patriotism, and community involvement dating back to 1947. Founded on the principles of The American Legion, our Post has spent generations honoring those who served our country, supporting veterans and their families, and making a positive difference in the Saginaw community.

A Tradition of Service

Since its founding, Post 439 has been dedicated to preserving the memories and sacrifices of our nation's veterans while providing a place for friendship, fellowship, and mutual support.

In October 1947, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 439 was established, strengthening our Post's commitment to veterans, families, and community service.

In July 1965, the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 439 was formed, continuing that tradition of service and earning statewide recognition for its programs.

Together, our Legionnaires, Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion have helped build a strong foundation of volunteerism, patriotism, and community pride.

Honoring Those Who Served

Throughout our history, Post 439 has proudly participated in Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances, ensuring the sacrifices of our military men and women are never forgotten.

Our Post has also played an important role in veterans' graves registration and remembrance efforts throughout Saginaw County.

One particularly meaningful part of our history is the establishment of a burial lot at Roselawn Cemetery, marked by a monument honoring servicemen without family. The tradition of placing American flags on veterans' graves reflects our continued commitment to honoring those who served.

Supporting Future Generations

Beyond honoring our veterans, Post 439 has supported educational scholarships, youth opportunities, charitable efforts, and community programs.

These efforts reflect the belief that serving our country does not end with military service — it continues through helping others and strengthening the communities we call home.

Our Legacy Continues

Today, American Legion Post 439 continues to build on nearly eight decades of proud tradition.

With growing membership participation, exciting entertainment and activities, improvements to our facilities, and a renewed commitment to community involvement, our Post remains a welcoming gathering place for veterans, families, and friends.

While much has changed since 1947, our purpose remains the same: to honor our veterans, support our community, and preserve the values and traditions of The American Legion for future generations.

Honoring Our Past. Serving Our Present. Building Our Future.
